Treatment/ Intervention

While ecstasy is not currently used as therapy, it was used without support of clinical trials in the 70s. Now, this drug could help with post traumatic stress disorder but is advised against being used for other psychiatric conditions. Clinical trials are ongoing to explore MDMA’s therapeutic potential in treating PTSD and anxiety in autistic adults and cancer patients. A study published in 2010 revealed that MDMA helped patients overcome PTSD, with maintained remission from the disorder for up to 6 years without further use of MDMA. Currently, many European countries are in the process of making MDMA a licensed treatment in 2021

There are no specific treatments for MDMA addiction. However, behavioral therapy has been helpful for past addicts and there are many trials in question for medication targets that could treat an addiction. For example, this study shows that Duloxetine could potentially be used to treat MDMA addiction as it inhibits the effects of the drug. MDMA can cause abnormalities in serotonin levels. This study reveals the effects of dextromethorphan (DM) on MDMA.
